Thanks to a family who believed in the shared humanity of all people, I began travelling internationally with the purpose of learning at age eight.
As an adult I travelled, studied, and worked in countries such as Indonesia, Syria, Cuba, Lebanon, Jordan, Portugal, Vietnam, East Timor, and Italy.
After working in international development for over 10 years, I launched Between Deserts Travel knowing that real change for the better comes from personal experience with the full range of human experience, and must start from within.
Inspired by travellers and artists from many times and places, the values and spirit of Between Deserts Travel are based on a curiosity for, and acceptance of, the diversity of human expression and stories.
Everywhere Beauty
Curiosity is the gateway to empathy. Empathy is the path to love and connection.
Between Deserts Travel aims to take participants beyond tourism, beyond alternative travel, and into something much more profound – a journey of lasting connection, both to self and others.
We do this through blending self-development with engagement with the extremes of human experience in diverse cultures and communities around the world. This means our trips are shaped around learning about the cultural, material, and spiritual circumstances that shape others’ lives, while investigating the factors that make us who we are.
Every participant thus takes responsibility for their own experience, while as a collective, we expand our capacity to take on multiple perspectives, be the best version of ourselves in testing circumstances, and broaden our awareness of shared human experience.
By doing so, we aim to create a new personal and collective capacities for compassion, connection, conflict resolution and leadership among our global community.
This goal is driven by the spirit of “everywhere beauty” – which holds faith that even among poverty, tragedy and trauma, all people are capable of stunning humanity.
